Scents have always been something that connects us to our memories, and this is what drew Bau Bau founder, Christine Lafian, to craft her own incense line. In her words, “some of my

very early memories in life are waking up to the smell of my mum’s perfume, the smell of my grandpa’s cologne mixed with his cigarette, the smell of my grandma’s laundry room, and even the smell of herbs in the local market in my grandma’s island.” There is something very calming and melancholic about smells that can trigger memories. What makes being human so special

is our memories, and how our senses slip us into the comfort of our past. Through our smell, we can be softly taken into the moments of our lives that are calm and peaceful. Bau Bau invites you to enjoy the comfort of remembering small, special moments in your life. The idea for Bau Bau

is to interpret these aromatic fragments of memories into scents that enable one to recreate the ritual-like and timeless quality of those moments.

Every product made for Bau Bau is crafted by hand in Bali. Burning incense daily is part of the ceremonial rituals of Bali, and the craft of making beautiful, soft, and delicate incense has been perfected by local artisans. The focus of this incense is not only on wellness, but on grounding ourselves, reminding ourselves of our past, and inviting us to slip into the comfort of collective nostalgia. Bau Bau takes the traditional ritual of burning incense and interprets it as a hopeful process; connecting us to memories, our loved ones, and the spaces that make us feel at home.
